As a mother, organizations that help children are near and dear to my heart. That’s why I’m so excited to be partnering with the Make-A-Wish® and help make kid’s dreams come true on World Wish Day.
The wish of a 7 year old boy over 30 years ago to be a police officer for one day was the inspiration that founded Make-A-Wish. Since that time Make-A-Wish has granted wishes for children worldwide. In 2012 alone, Make-A-Wish successfully granted nearly 14,000 life-changing wishes to children with life altering medical conditions.
When kids make a wish, they wish big. So, it’s not surprising that over 75% of wishes require air travel which translates into a vital but expensive resource. Think about this, each year it takes nearly 50,000 plane tickets which translates into 2.5 billion airline miles or $37.5 million dollar to cover travel for wish kids and their families on these amazing wish adventures.
Make-A-Wish grants wishes to those kids with life-threatening medical conditions but they can’t do it alone – they need your help! Do you have forgotten frequent flier miles sitting in an account somewhere that will never be cashed in? Or maybe you’ve just had an exceptionally blessed month and are able to give financially. Making a monetary donation or that of airline miles will help Make-A-Wish in granting even more wishes and offering kids and their families hope.
Starting on April 1 and wrapping up on World Wish Day (April 29), Make-A-Wish is organizing an initiative to raise money and airline miles in an effort to continue granting wishes that involve travel. Make your miles really count because there are so many organizations and individuals rallying around World Wish Day and making it a success.
- WWE® Superstar John Cena® has vowed to personally match every frequent flier mile donated in April (up to 4.5 million).
- WWE will be using its assets to promote World Wish Day to over 143 million social media fans and 13 million weekly U.S. viewers.
- United Airlines has pledged to double MileagePlus member donations up to 3 million miles through the month of April.
- Other sponsors are getting involved with various promotions including Maggiano’s Little Italy®, Marquis®, Brooks Brothers, and Dave & Buster’s.
Do wishes really make a difference in the physical health and outlook of wish kids? According to a 2011 study of U.S. healthcare professionals, they do. Kids describe their wish experiences as giving them renewed strength to continue fighting their illnesses, and parents of these kids say these trips further strengthen their family bonds. Both healthcare professionals and parents describe the wish experience as a turning point in the wish kid’s health battle. Sometimes all you need is a little hope and happiness to inspire you to triumph!
I urge you to search your heart and visit wish.org/tickets to make your donation.
This year, 10,000 wish kids and their families will travel for a Make-A-Wish® experience. That’s 50,000 roundtrip tickets or 2.5 billion frequent flier miles. In honor of World Wish Day®, the day of the wish that inspired the founding of Make-A-Wish, visit wish.org/tickets and donate miles and dollars – and help wish kids take flight.
