How to Wind Down Before Bed

If you’ve ever struggled with getting to sleep at night, there’s a good possibility that you don’t know how to wind down before bed. And if you do know how, you’re not doing it. Today I’m sharing with you how to wind down before bed as part of a sponsored post on behalf of Mirum, but all thoughts and experiences are my own.

Knowing how to wind down before bed and allowing yourself 30-60 minutes to do so is crucial to getting a good night’s sleep. This time to calm down and clear your thoughts before settling in for the night is crucial to falling asleep quickly and staying that way. Instead of going directly from constant movement right into bed, you’re allowing for a transitional period to slow things down instead of slamming on the brakes and not allowing your mind and body the opportunity to catch up.

How to wind down before bed depends on how much time you have to unwind and what works for you. Here are 5 things you can try as part of your nightly routine to see what works best for bringing on sleep more quickly.

5 Tips to Unwind Before Bed

1. Take a bath.

There’s nothing quite as soothing after a long day like taking a hot bath. Let your muscle relax and your mind drift away while soaking in the tub.

2. Grab a drink.

A mug of green tea or a glass of red wine is a well-earned treat after surviving the day. Studies have shown that both green tea and red wine are good for heart health and will help nudge you a little closer to sleep.

3. Care for your skin.

If you’re anything like me, after a long day of wearing makeup, your skin needs a break and a little help to get ready for a night of recovery.

Add in some extra hydration during the winter months with Simple Water Boost products. Start with the Micellar Cleansing Water which is infused with skin-loving minerals and plant extracts that were developed to heal dry, dehydrated, or sensitive skin.

Simple Water Boost Micellar Gel Wash is a no-rinse cleanser that’s extremely gentle, yet effective at cleaning your face from impurities, removing makeup, while also soothing and hydrating parched skin.

Waterproof eye makeup can be stubborn and hard to remove. If you have sensitive eyes, you can also make your own makeup remover wipes.

Next apply Simple Water Boost Skin Quench Sleeping Cream to transform dull, tired skin and replenish dehydrated skin while you sleep. Like all the Simple products, this silky, lightweight moisturizer contains no harsh chemicals, artificial colors or perfumes which allow for the products to deeply hydrate without irritating the skin with unneeded ingredients.

But my bedtime skincare routine doesn’t just stop at my face. I also like to apply lotion to my entire body with a heavier cream on my feet along with socks to lock in the hydration and heal dry skin. And add a layer of petroleum jelly to my lips to keep them moisturized while I’m sleeping.

4. Watch TV/Read a Book.

There are varying studies about what screentime does to you right before bed. I find I can sleep much easier if I watch a TV show (my husband and I are binging on The Blacklist right now) or read a novel before bed better than if I’m on my computer or reading a non-fiction book. The trip into fantasyland helps me wind down and not work so hard at the end of the day.

5. Prayer/Meditation.

Even though I know how to wind down before bed, if I skip prayer or meditation to end things off, my mind can often wander. Too much wandering and worry can also lead to insomnia. Allowing your mind to focus on your prayers, breathing, or mindfulness, in general, can block off wandering thoughts and help usher in a good night’s sleep quickly.
