When we think of matchmaking, we often think of couples finding their perfect match. Loved ones try to set up those they think are most compatible and hope that they have chemistry, but only a face-to-face meeting will tell whether or not they’re actually compatible.
But have you ever done that with a pet. We just did and it was an experience I was pretty apprehensive about.
We decided we wanted to adopt an English Bulldog and had our heart set on one based on her story and appearance and submitted our application. It was only after we applied that we found out we would be matched based on the dog they felt would be best for our family.
This was completely new to us and involved a pretty exhaustive process. Not only did I complete a 5 page questionnaire, my current vet was called as a reference, I had a phone interview with an adoption coordinator, and a subsequent interview with a prospective foster mom that we might be a good match for.
I was totally unprepared for this process in order to find the perfect dog for our family. Now that we’re on the other side of things, I totally get it.
The rescue has saved these dogs from bad situations or families that were unable to care for these pets and they don’t want to place them in a home that isn’t the right fit for them only to have them to be displaced and end up back at the rescue again.
Despite a 7 hour roundtrip car ride in two vehicles, I’m thankful for the entire process. Fortunately for us, this the rescue selected a potential match that was the best for our family and ended up being perfect! We’ve had her for about 10 days now and she has everyone completely in love with her and can’t imagine living life without her. Having a dog that is submissive to our male bulldog, gentle with our kids, and good with chickens were our priorities – anything else we could deal with and she’s been great!
I can honestly say the dog we have now is different than the dog that was in the photos online. No longer is she crate bound and battling heart worms, she’s cuddly and spunky and full of personality!
This former puppy mill mama that spent her first 5 years in a crate has entered a whole new life filled with lots of snuggling and affection that she might not have had if she hadn’t been matched with our family.
There’s a lot that potential dog owners don’t realize about adopting a pet. Z Living’s newest show, Finding Fido, (premiering January 17 at 9pm ET) is all about matchmaking the perfect people with their ideal pup. Instead of going through the lengthy rescue process (ours took about 3 weeks), these pooches are matched in an episode right in front of your eyes. You can see exactly what goes into making the perfect match and finding a dog their forever home.
