How to Keep Cool This Summer: Fashion Tips

Surviving summer in Texas isn’t always easy. We moved to Austin in the midst of a drought that didn’t let up until last year. In fact, the summer I was pregnant with Colby was the hottest on record with over 90 consecutive days of 100+ degree temps.

Texas is not for sissies.

Having moved from Colorado, we had a lot to learn about what it takes to make it through the summers here. We obviously knew it meant lots of water – to drink and to play in. But it also meant rethinking our everyday habits.

Super dry air in Colorado didn’t exist in Texas and the addition of humidity made my beauty and style routines change. Thick moisturizers and makeups just weren’t necessary and weren’t comfortable.

I needed light, breathable coverage, not just for my face so I didn’t have uneven coverage with sweaty makeup dripping down, but also with my clothes. Colorado obviously has summers too but nothing quite as long, hot, or humid as Texas.

Here, it’s hot around the clock in summer. Just because the sun goes down doesn’t mean it gets cold. The temp may just drop to a more tolerable 80 degrees (the high temp in some parts of the country).

How to Keep Cool This Summer

My go to day-to-day outfit in summer has become denim shorts and a tank top. It’s not necessarily a capsule wardrobe, but having a few cute pairs of denim shorts in different styles and washes to pair with tank tops has been my key to comfort during the long, hot Texas summer. Cotton is my go-to and already in the pieces that I own and love.

While you might not think of denim shorts as the best choice, I love them because they’re made of cotton so that means it’s breathable and even if you do sweat (and you will), it won’t retain the embarrassing odor. And unlike mystery fabrics, you don’t have to worry about denim easily falling apart or smelling. Target is my go to for denim shorts because I can stay up on all of the latest trends without breaking the bank. To get all of the benefits of cotton in denim, you can get a blend but make sure you go for 90% or higher cotton.

Most days I live in cotton tank tops in solid colors. It’s easy to mix and match with my shorts and creates a lot less stress when getting ready in the morning. My favorite tank tops are at Target and Banana Republic because they’re great quality and don’t pill or fall apart. Just look for 60% or more cotton content because you can’t really tell by touching a piece what the fiber content is because there are so many synthetics/mystery fabrics making their way into stores.

Tank tops are just so comfortable and can be dressed up or down depending on your accessories. For days when I’m not just running to the grocery store and want to go on a date night or out with the girls, I like to use tank tops with a little more visual interest. Y’all know I’m a huge Denver Broncos fan so when I saw this loose tank with gold lettering from the NFL Shop, I knew I needed to grab it! Dressing in cotton makes staying cool in summer so much easier because it breathes and keeps me cool without having to sacrifice style.
