6 Tips For Packing and Moving

I’ve joked in the past that I’m a modern-day gypsy but it wasn’t until I did the math that I realized that it’s not really a joke. With a dad in the Air Force and a husband who’s job takes us across the country and back again, I’ve never lived in one house for too long. In my 29 years I’ve moved 15 times (does not include temporary housing for one month or less) and have lived in two different countries, five different states, and eight different cities.

The longest I have ever lived in one house is five years. With all of that moving comes a lot of packing, transporting, and storing of our household items. Since I have moved so many times, I consider myself a pro and wanted to share my knowledge of packing and moving tips might be helpful to those that are relocating soon.

6 Tips for Packing and Moving

  1. Start early. Don’t allow any time to go to waste. As soon as you find out you’ll be moving, it’s time to get to work. Lists and calendars are great ways to ensure you stay on track and nothing gets overlooked.
  2. Pack light. Declutter and get rid of all the stuff you really don’t need. Many professional moving companies don’t allow liquids or items that are flammable to be transported, so start using up all of those cleaning products and toiletries now. Don’t forget – nail polish is flammable. If you don’t want to start over on your nail polish collection (or toiletries), plan ahead to take these items with you in your vehicle.
  3. Donate. Moving is expensive so try to find ways to lower your tax bill like donating used clothing, furniture, and household goods to a charity. Don’t forget to make a list of all items donated and get a receipt!
  4. Use what you have. Minimize your out-of-pocket expenses by using things like bedding, towels, and clothing as padding and protection for fragile items.
  5. Be descriptive. Make sure to label all boxes with not only the room but also with large items in the box. This will make unpacking much easier and help you locate items without frustration. I like to use a different colored marker for each room in the house so there’s less confusion when unloading the boxes off a truck.
  6. Know your timetable. Depending on the distance of your move, mode of delivery, and housing logistics you may arrive to your destination before your belongings do. Most moving companies offer long storage options for a hefty fee, so if you have the time and strength consider renting a storage unit. This will allow you the flexibility you need to make a seamless transition to your new home.

These are fantastic tips! My husband and I bought our first house about 11 years ago. We thought we had a TON of stuff but it only took half of a giant UHaul to move all of our things. I am dreading when we move out of our house now! It's amazing how much stuff you accumulate as you get older and have kids. It's probably gonna take us 3 UHauls next time :)
