With the weather cooling down and the seasons changing, your entire body is going to start feeling dry and in need of some serious moisture. I know for me, the drier weather and cooler temps also irritate the balance on my scalp and so I have to be proactive about taking care of it.

Fall Hair Care Tips + How to Get Your Hair Ready for Fall

1. Mix up your color.

Trade in your highlights for lowlights or use less color overall even allowing the underside of your hair to grow in naturally. This will create dimension, depth, and a more natural look as the underside of your hair usually doesn’t get shown much during fall.

2. Try a new cut.

You may think that summer is the perfect time to try a shorter look, when in fact it’s fall. My hair stylist says we’re all so used to throwing our hair up in a top knot or pony during summer when we get hot, so trying a short look can actually be more of an adjustment. Plus, it’s a great time to get rid of all of that damaged, overchlorinated hair and if the style doesn’t turn out as you wanted, throw on a hat to cover things up.

3. Deep condition.

More advice straight from my stylist, deep condition your hair every time you wash in fall and winter. Her suggestion is on a day you’re not leaving the house, wash and then either apply conditioner all over your hair and put up in a top knot. All. Day. Long. This is especially important if you color treat or rely on heat styling. She says this is the easiest way to infuse some moisture without any expensive treatments or special products.

4. Use dry conditioner on your roots.

When the weather turns cooler, your hair is already dry so you don’t want to dry it out any more than necessary. I know for me, any time I wash my hair it also means I need to dry and style which only dries my hair out more. After having dry, tired hair for way too long, I now only use heat styling on the day that I wash which will usually last me two days. On the other days, I add some dry shampoo and throw it up in a high pony or messy bun.

5. Change your shampoo and conditioner.

As you’re changing up your hair routine for fall, now’s a great time to change your shampoo and conditioner. Y’all know I’m a huge fan of Dove so I was so excited to learn they had introduced the Dermacare Scalp line of products targeted at helping avoid dry scalps without destroying your hair.

Change your shampoo and conditioner

I really love that Dove Dermacare Scalp isn’t a 2-in-1 product. Instead, the Dove Dermacare Shampoo and Conditioner are each separate so your hair doesn’t feel even drier but feels moisturized and refreshed.

Dove’s Dermacare Scalp Dryness and Itch Relief Shampoo smells like summer with the coconut shea butter scent and is specifically designed to help moisturize your dry scalp and give you some relief from the itchiness with Pyrithione Zinc. This shampoo is gentle enough to use every day with a mild, pH balanced formula that not only cleans your hair while relieving the dryness and itchiness you might experience with the changing seasons.

Deep condition your hair
