Kidfresh – Convenient Kids Meals On the Go

This fall our schedule has gotten quite a bit busier this fall than ever before. Mondays are the most hectic these days because we have two things in one day. Two things in one day is a lot for a not quite four year old especially when you have an infant with naps to keep in mind as well.

We now have speech therapy in the morning and gymnastics in the afternoon. Unfortunately we have to leave the house for speech at 11am, quite a bit earlier than we would typically eat. But I can’t hold off on eating lunch before speech or Cakes has a tough time focusing.

This presents a challenge because I like to keep her on a schedule and ensure she eats at the same time. And as a parent of a preschooler, I know I’m not alone in mealtimes becoming quite long as we persuade them to eat just one more bite.

I headed out to our local Safeway affiliate, Randalls, a few days ago in search of something to help me with this problem. While there I checked out the frozen foods section and was pretty surprised to see so many options targeted at convenience meals for kids. Unfortunately most of the options were loaded with artificial flavors and well, junk. I did locate some Kidfresh frozen kid’s meals that I learned are a Safeway affiliate exclusive and picked up a couple to have Cakes try out.

These meals are the perfect size for small tummies, are all-natural, and have hidden veggies. I thought Cakes might enjoy the novelty of a frozen meal and it could be conveniently eaten on the go while still ensuring she had a nutritious lunch no matter how chaotic our day became. If there’s one thing that kids love, it’s cheese. And Kidfresh knows this with two of the options packing cheesy goodness in every bite. I purchased both the Muy Cheesy Quesadillas and the Wagon Wheels Mac + Cheese.

These meals cook really quickly in the microwave and everything is heated and the cheese is melted within a minute or two. Cakes tried the macaroni and cheese for dinner this weekend as we were heading out and I grabbed the first bite to (ahem) test out the temperature of the macaroni and cheese. I was actually pretty surprised but this is food that I would even enjoy eating.

Today I tried something new. I made lunch portable so that Cakes could eat in the truck on the way to speech. It’s amazing the focus that comes with being confined to one spot and reducing the number of distractions. It also helps when the lunch I started with is something that she’s guaranteed to love – cheese quesadillas! She managed to eat the entire thing in our short 15-minute drive to speech and I still have one left in my freezer for next week.

After the positive reactions I’ve received thus far I can’t wait to try, I mean have Cakes try the other available Kidfresh products – Totally Twisted Pasta and Meatballs, Rainbow Rice and Chicken, Easy Cheesy Ravioli, and Spaghetti Loops Bolognese. While I don’t typically purchase frozen meals, I think I may have found a solution to our Monday mealtime dilemma.

I don't live anywhere near a Safeway. For the most part if the kids need a lunch I make it before heading out, or I will wind up buying McDonalds or Subways. It seems like they wait until the very last minute until they are near starvation to ask for food. Whole foods carry some nice alternatives but they are on the expensive side. I will try to find these in another market.

Those look awesome! It is always hard to keep kids eating healthy or kind of healthy while in and out of the house! I will have to give them a try :)

I'm so glad there are better convenience foods now. And just let me say this--I LOVE Randall's (and Safeway.) When I visit my family in Galveston, Randall's is always one of my first stops :)

WOW awesome. It seems like the moment we get in the card and my 7 year old stops I immediately hear "MOM, I am hungry" I will have to pick some of these up.
