How to Keep Your Floors Clean with Kids and Pets

This spring and summer our family is taking our show on the road. We bought a travel trailer so we can take the entire family including our dogs on our adventures.

Since we’ll be gone from home so much, we decided to rent out our house when we’re gone. This means we have to deep clean our house from top to bottom as much as possible between guests.

Our current record is 3 sets of guests in 10 days. With that kind of turnover, we have to do as much as we can when we are home.

Since most of us clean from the top down, it means we leave the floors for last. And with kids and pets, the floors can get super dirty.

Our house is 80% hard surfaces between the concrete floors downstairs and wood floors on upstairs. Hard surface flooring is unforgiving and shows everything. And we have two area rugs one of which is 12′ x 15′.

Which means cleaning the floors can eat up a ton of time. And if you don’t clean them, is extremely noticeable. There’s nothing worse than expecting guests for a 3pm check-in time and not feeling like your house is completely clean.

After several weeks of renting out our house, I now have the floor situation down. Here is How to Keep Your Floors Clean with Kids and Pets. Whether you’re renting out your house, preparing for guests, or just want clean floors these tips are for you.

How to clean your floors

1. Daily.

Doing a little each day goes a long way in keeping your floors clean with kids and pets. My daily floor cleaning is easy because I have a schedule set on our robotic vacuum.

You’d be amazed at how much time dirt this little guy pulls off the floor every day. It also saves me a ton of time when it’s time to do a bigger cleaning job on the floors because there’s not as much to pick up.

2. Weekly.

The weekly tasks take a bit more time but are still very necessary to keep your floors clean. I have these listed as weekly, but if you’re renting out your house, you’ll want to do all of these between every guest.

While not technically on the floor, I clean the baseboards first. It’s that whole top-down thing again. You could use a lint-free cloth or even enlist the kids to help by putting a sock over their hands.

Then, I pull out the full-sized vacuum for the area rugs. I love this rainbow rug but it’s huge so there’s a lot of area for pet messes.

I use a Swiffer on the stairs and in any of the places, the robotic vacuum can’t reach. You’d be surprised at how many rogue dog hairs I find.

I finish up the floors by using this wet mop. I have two separate wet mops – one with a cleaner made especially for the wood floors upstairs. And another for the concrete downstairs that I just use a soap and water mix in.

3. Spot Clean.

Kids and pets make lots of messes. Waiting to clean up spills or accidents will only make things harder to clean. It’s also surprising how fast the dog smell shows up.

Until recently we only rented a steam cleaner once a year, but now that we have the BISSELL Little Green ProHeat Portable Deep Cleaner it’s been a game changer. It’s now easier than ever to stay on top of messes. My only regret is not having this when my kids and pets were younger!

The built-in HeatWave Technology to maintain consistent water temperature along with BISSELL Professional Spot & Stain + Oxy allow the Little Green ProHeat Portable Deep Cleaner to permanently remove stubborn spots and stains.

If size or price has ever deterred you from buying your own steam cleaner, the BISSELL Little Green ProHeat Portable Deep Cleaner is definitely the one for you. This is the perfect steam cleaner because it’s so powerful, yet easy to compact and portable.
