Thankfully I don't remember a time before dishwashers. Now they're in almost every home and can do dishes faster and better than washing them by hand.

So it can be tempting to put things into the dishwasher that doesn't necessarily go there. But there are certain things you should never put in the dishwasher. To keep your kitchen gear looking its best, follow these helpful tips.

5 Things Not to Put in the Dishwasher

1. Cast Iron

I guarantee if you put your cast iron pots and pans into the dishwasher, it'll be a sad day for you. Cast iron rusts in water so getting it back to its optimal, perfectly seasoned state may be a struggle.

2. Metal cookware

Check your label to be sure, but avoid putting metal cookware including copper pots, moscow mule cups, aluminum cookware, stainless steel, etc. in the dishwasher. The high heat can cause these items to dull and lose their shine over time. Pans with a nonstick coating are usually ok.

Are Yetis dishwasher safe?

Yetis are safe to go in the top rack according to the company. The other popular brands of double insulated water bottles, travel mugs, etc. also maintain they're safe too. Just remember to remove the rubber gasket on your lid and wash that in the silverware basket.

3. Anything with decals

If you want your decals or hand painted items to keep looking good, don't put them in the dishwasher. The powerful trigger sprays can lead to these decals chipping, melting or warping.

4. Kitchen knives

You never want to put your good kitchen knives into the dishwasher. The dishwashing detergent can dull the blades and loosen the handles.

5. Wood/bamboo

Anything made of wood, bamboo, or with wooden handles including cutting boards, bowls, spoons, etc. could be scratched or warped by the high temperatures of the water. And prolonged exposure to the water and drying cycle can cause the wood to rot in some cases.
