Quotes on Grief and Mourning

I’m still grieving my dog, Stoli, and have been trying to find comfort through these quotes on loss and grief.

“And can it be that in a world so full and busy the loss of one creature makes a void so wide and deep that nothing but the width and depth of eternity can fill it up.”
~Charles Dickens

“Animals have a much better attitude to life and death than we do. They know when their time has come. We are the ones that suffer when they pass, but it’s a healing kind of grief that enables us to deal with other griefs that are not so easy to grab hold of.”
~Emmylou Harris

“To spare oneself from grief at all cost can be achieved only at the price of total detachment, which excludes the ability to experience happiness.”
~Erich Fromm

“Memory is a way of holding on to the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose.”
~The Wonder Years

“He that conceals his grief finds no remedy for it.”
~Turkish Proverb

“Grief is a process, not a state.”
~Anne Grant

“I learned that, with grief, you have to take it one day at a time and learn how to find the happiness amid the heartbreak.”
~Adrienne C. Moore

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”
~Jesus, Matthew 5:4

“Mourning is one of the most profound human experiences that it is possible to have… The deep capacity to weep for the loss of a loved one and to continue to treasure the memory of that loss is one of our noblest human traits.”
~Shneidman

“Tearless grief bleeds inwardly.”
~Christian Nestell Bovee

“Your grief path is yours alone, and no one else can walk it, and no one else can understand it.”
~Terri Irwin

“We find a place for what we lose. Although we know that after such a loss the acute stage of mourning will subside, we also know that we shall remain inconsolable and will never find a substitute. No matter what may fill the gap, even if it be filled completely, it nevertheless remains something else.”
~Sigmund Freud

“Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.”
~From a headstone in Ireland

“There is a sacredness in tears. They are not the mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are the messengers of overwhelming grief… and unspeakable love.”
~Washington Irving

“Tears are the silent language of grief.”
~Voltaire

“Grief is not a disorder, a disease or a sign of weakness. It is an emotional, physical and spiritual necessity, the price you pay for love. The only cure for grief is to grieve.”
~Earl Grollman

“Guilt is perhaps the most painful companion to death.”
~Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

“Grieving is a journey that teaches us how to love in a new way now that our loved one is no longer with us. Consciously remembering those who have died is the key that opens the hearts, that allows us to love them in new ways.”
~Tom Attig

“No one ever told me that grief felt so like fear.”
~C.S. Lewis

“Grief changes shape, but it never ends.”
~Keanu Reeves

“Sorrow makes us all children again – destroys all differences of intellect. The wisest know nothing.”
~Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Grief is the price we pay for love.”
~Queen Elizabeth II

“There are things that we don’t want to happen but have to accept, things we don’t want to know but have to learn, and people we can’t live without but have to let go.”
~Author Unknown

“When grief is deepest, words are fewest.”
~Ann Voskamp

“Grief is never something you get over. You don’t wake up one morning and say, ‘I’ve conquered that; now I’m moving on.’ It’s something that walks beside you every day. And if you can learn how to manage it and honor the person that you miss, you can take something that is incredibly sad and have some form of positivity.”
~Terri Irwin

“Grief is two parts. The first is loss. The second is remaking the life.”
~Annie Roiphe

“There is no pain so great as the memory of joy in present grief.”

Its become a daily thing for me to cry. Lastnight i cried myself to sleep. This morning i Cried on the way to work for my beloved big brother who died very unexpectedly last december at age 27. Things like that don't make sense and when all you want is an answer you aren't guarenteed to get in this life it helps to be open to looking at it in a different light. These quotes are my "different light" and i appreciate them more that words can say! very comforting! THANK YOU

I'm so sorry about your loss, Kelly. Whether it is a fur-baby or human, it is equally painful.

These are beautiful quotes, and they really hit home since I lost my dad last year.

I agree it's equally as difficult, especially depending on your relationship. I appreciate your commenting on that because a lot of people fail to recognize it and just expect you to get over it faster being a fur baby.

Love these quotes. No words or anything can help with the heartache of losing a loved one. I have found that the pain just hits at the craziest times. You see something or hear something that makes you think of "your baby" and it is almost too much to handle. Just remember that when she was with you her life was wonderful and she will always be loved.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm still stuck in the crying every day cycle and wishing there was something I could do to undo this.
