High Risk Pregnancy Consult Appointment

I did it! I finally went and made a pre-pregnancy consult appointment with a new OB. How's that for planning ahead of time?! When I was deciding on OBs after moving to Texas I had it narrowed between the one I ultimately went with and the one I visited today. Sadly, my own rationale for choosing the other provider's office, is they had more women providers. My punishment for leaving my obstetrical fate up to a coin toss, is choosing a new provider after the fact.

It's such a relief that I went and had the consult with the new doctor before blindly switching practices. The only real downside of the appointment was the 40 minute wait. Cakes did amazing and kept herself busy watching a movie, reading a book, and playing games on my phone. The doctor made sure to address the high risk nature of my new patient paperwork and preventative measures that would be taken. After telling an abbreviated version of my history to the doctor, I began to loosen up and feel at ease.

The doctor really impressed me with his knowledge of high risk pregnancies. Since  I'll be switching from an office with doctors and midwives that have no communication skills, to an office with eight doctors that are able to function independently yet collaborate, is a huge change. Wait times at both practices are similar, so I don't feel like I'm making any sacrifices in transferring my care and instead feel reassured in my decision. And my health insurance is accepted at both and my out-of-pocket expenses won't change. Any hesitations I had have gone out the window and I feel extremely secure and lucky to have found such an amazing new practice.

Now just to get pregnant…

That is wonderful news hun! It's so important to like your OB…especially when you are high risk. Lots of baby dust coming your way!

Well i'm glad that you liked them! with my first pregnancy I literally just found the closest Dr. that was covered by my insurance. Then when I was pregnant with my second, I knew something had to change. So I did a little more research. This time was WAY better and I love the Dr's I have. I didn't even know until AFTER my planned c-section (due to a 4th degree episiotomy w/my first son!) with them that they are a c-section specialty office where they stitch you back up as if you had a tummy tuck, meaning there is virtually no pain and no weight restrictions afterwards. The only pain I had was in my chest (and enough to take pain meds for!)

Its very important to be on the same page with them. 🙂

I'm so happy you finally found a doctor that you can trust. I hope things are better this time around, but it sounds like it couldn't be worse! Having a doctor that you can work with makes such a big difference.

I'm so glad to hear that you're seeing someone that you can try to figure out the cause of your high risk pregnancies. I wish you the best of luck ttc! (((hugs)))

I'm glad you posted this because it reminded me that I needed to schedule an appointment myself! Is it common to interview practices prior to getting pregnant, or is it because you have a high-risk history?

I'm curious because I'm planning to go off birth control and start trying in May. What kinds of questions or things did you look for when interviewing the OB practice?

I'm pretty happy with who I see for my well woman care – it's staffed by ARNP's but headed by an OB/GYN. I don't want to just make a blind decision either.
