From the time I was a kid, loading the dishwasher has always been one of my chores. Over the years, my technique has evolved as the number and types of dishes changed.

Like most people, I wash more dishes during the holidays with all the extra entertaining than any other time of year. I love when people help cleaning up, but when it comes to the dishes they need some help with how to load a dishwasher.

To avoid offending them, I haven’t told them the best way to load a dishwasher, but I did want to share my tips with you today. 

5 Dishwasher Loading Tips

1. Stop pre-washing your dishes. 

Modern dishwashers are much more powerful than the ones we grew up using. It’s smart to give a quick wipe down to remove large chunks, but prewashing your dishes isn’t necessary. Dishwashing detergents are actually designed to cling to the gunk on dishes and if it’s not there things could get a little overly sudsy. Or, if you’re using tablets, the tablets might not dissolve completely. 

2. Angle dishes toward the center. 

Look inside your dishwasher, is your sprayer arm located on the bottom? To allow for the flow of water over all of your dishes, make sure you angle your dishes toward the inside instead of the outside where it’s harder for the water to reach.

3. Allow for space.

Don’t overload your dishwasher. As tempting as it is to turn loading all the holiday dishes into the dishwasher like a game of Tetris, if the dishes are too close together it’ll block the water from reaching them.

4. Put delicate items on the top rack.

Avoid broken glass or melting plastic – place items like soft plastics, wine glasses, and other delicate items on top. 

5. Mix up your silverware. 

This is one of the tips that I didn’t learn until a few years ago. Don’t go all Type-A as I did for most of my life and separate your silverware. By mixing things up, you let it cleaner because the pieces aren’t nested on top of each other.  Sure it’ll take a little longer to unload but will save you from finding food stuck to your utensils.
