There are people out there that say finding out the sex of your unborn child is ruining one of life’s great surprises. Being 14 weeks pregnant, I can honestly say that I am not one of those people. I have a hard enough waiting until the big ultrasound at 20 weeks. I can’t even imagine trying to wait an entire 40 weeks before finding out. I need to find out the gender as soon as possible.
Aside from paying an outlandish fee for an elective 3D ultrasound, I’m willing to do just about any at home gender predictor test that I can find. One of the most popular at home gender tests on the birth boards is the cabbage gender test. If you’re not pregnant or haven’t heard of the test before, you can follow the four steps below to see the lengths I (and many other pregnant women apparently) will go to in order to find out the gender of our baby as soon as possible.
1. Cut a red cabbage in half and chop into small pieces.
2. Bring 2 cups water to a boil and then add cabbage to pot. Simmer for 10 minutes. The water will turn a deep purple.
3. Gather urine in a cup and set aside. Then, gather an equal amount of liquid from the cabbage and mix with urine.
4. Figure out the results! Red/pink = boy and purple = girl.
I’ve seen some results that are magenta shade and hard to tell if it’s more red/pink or purple. This definitely looks like we’re having another girl to me!
Update: Our 20-week ultrasound results confirmed that we are having another girl!
Have you done the cabbage gender test before? Were your results right?
I have never heard of this one but my big ultrasound is Monday for the twins. *gulp* We did Intelligender and it said girls again LOL
Definitely looks purple to me!
Very purple!! I had never heard of this test!!
Never heard of that LOL. Though red cabbage makes purple juice naturally, I’d be amazed if the same result came from regular cabbage! You could totally patent it then lol
NEVER heard of that test before! Interesting.
that’s definitely purple! Hope it’s right!
only a blogger would pee in a cup and take pictures of it! LMAO! I’m interested to see how accurate it is!
That’s kinda cool. I have never in my life heard of that. Heck until recently aside from ultrasounds i didn’t know there were any kind of gender tests LOL
hahah when do you find out what you really are having?
Never heard of it!
I’m going to try this out too!
OMG that is the weirdest thing ever! LOL
Is this the second test that came up girl?
Never heard of that one!!
I think another blogger did this test last year and I thought it was funny. It definitely looks purple to me!
I have never heard of this, but I think it’s hilarious that you took pictures. 🙂 And yes, that is DEFINITELY purple!
You should visit the birth boards on Baby Center – they are full of this kind of stuff. There’s a baking soda fizz test too but the pictures for that one aren’t quite as fun. Good luck at your ultrasound!
It’s amazing what lengths pregnant women will go to in order to find out the gender of the baby as soon as possible.
November 1st is my official big ultrasound!
I can’t wait to see what your results are and if they match up with the Chinese gender calendar like mine did.
The Intelligender came up boy and this one is coming up girl. But the Chinese gender calendar said girl too and I’m already thinking girl so we’ll see.
You should know almost everything is a potential blog post now!
LOL! And yes, it is definitely purple on my screen!! Can’t wait to see if this is true, as are you I am sure!!!!
That’s a girl!
I wonder what the science is behind it – I think I read somewhere that it probably has to do with how concentrated your urine is, so it’s a reflection of your hydration status 🙂 I’m sure I would totally do this test too if/when I get pregnant though!
If I understood the science correctly, the ph of your urine is pushed one way or the other based on the gender of your baby, and the cabbage juice, being a base, will tell if your urine is more acidic or alkaline (boy and girl, respectively, if I remember correctly). All I know is when I did this test at 12 weeks with #4, the cabbage juice said girl, and the ultrasound at 15 weeks said boy. I have never had an accurate home gender prediction test (and having had four kids, I’ve tried every old wives’ tale and cockamamie test on the furthest reaches of the internet), but they sure are fun!
By the way, I found your site through Stumble, and I’ve really enjoyed reading past posts!
Thanks for taking the time to comment and sharing your knowledge of this test. I thought it was something about reading the ph of your urine but I didn’t know that the gender could actually sway the ph. So far even with all the wives tales I’m still 50/50 but definitely feeling like it’s another girl. I’m going to have such a hard time waiting until November 1st to find out.
WOW…now that is a neat test!
I did the test too. Mine came out bright pink and I really feel like its a boy, so I really hope its right
Never heard of this but hope you find out soon!
