Magical Treats

What do you make as a dessert for someone that loves unicorns and mermaids and all things make-believe?

You bake them chocolaty brownies that are rich and perfectly chewy. Then you decorate them in swirls of pastels. Add some sprinkles for extra magic!

Shopping List

This is what you will need from the store before you make them:

  • Sugar
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Eggs
  • Cocoa Powder
  • Flour
  • Baking Powder
  • Butter
  • Powdered Sugar
  • Vanilla
  • Pastel gel food coloring
  • Sprinkles

Time-Saving Shortcuts

I made these brownies and the frosting completely from scratch. If you are pressed for time, here are some ways to save a few minutes:

  • Use boxed brownie mix
  • Make the frosting ahead of time

What to Serve With Them

You will want to keep the “magical” theme going, so serve the brownies with colorful treats like some of these:

  • Vanilla ice cream with sprinkles
  • Rainbow-decorated pretzel rods
  • White chocolate popcorn with sprinkles
  • Fruit kababs

Mermaid Party Ideas

These brownies can double as either mermaid party treats or unicorn ones. The color schemes are very similar. Here are some mermaid party ideas to go with your festive chocolate treats!

  • Colors – blues, greens, and purples
  • Balloons – use blue balloons like water bubbles around the room
  • Ocean-themed foods – serve starfish-shaped sandwiches, goldfish crackers and rock candy
  • Games – do face painting, a mermaid photo booth, and pin the tail on the mermaid.

Unicorn Party Ideas

There has been a huge surge in unicorn parties recently. If you are throwing one, these brownies will be perfect on the dessert table.

Unicorns are magical creatures, so keep your decorations bright and full of sparkles! Here are some ideas that will make your party pop!

  • Colors – Focus on pastels of all shades, from pinks and blues to greens and purples.
  • Tissue Paper and Streamers – use lots of long, flowing things for decoration to resemble a unicorn's mane.
  • Chocolate Covered Pretzels – decorate them with pastel sprinkles
  • Waffle-Cone Horns – Decorate waffle cones with melted white chocolate (in various shades of pastels) and sprinkles. They look like unicorn horns.
  • Make unicorn headbands as a craft or buy unicorn headbands as party favors.
  • Play pin the tail on the unicorn

How to Decorate Unicorn Brownies

The really fun part about these brownies is the decorating. You can be as creative or as simple as you want. Make them your own!

Chewy brownies recipe frosted.

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you decorate them.

Cocoa powder brownies.

Don't use too much food coloring. Keep lots of white frosting in the mix so it has an ethereal glimmer.

Use edible glitter. It's so fun to sprinkle it on and see the frosting glimmer and shine!

Let the frosting stiffen on the brownies. This will make them look more polished on the table.
